PREPARING FOR A SHOOT
Traditional portrait photography would avoid bright reds, oranges and yellows as they often compete with a subject’s face and can reflect colors which render skin tones with an unwanted color cast. However, as digital photography advancements have improved a camera' ability to differentiate light and color with higher precision, these colors have become more welcome in a portrait setting. Clients should still don these colors somewhat conservatively.
Avoid clothes with logos, slogans, or patterns. Avoid polka dots, bold stripes and large geometric designs which stand out and compete for attention when viewing a portrait.
Generally speaking, solid colors and subtle patterns work well. Should you take advantage of a change in wardrobe, you can also allow for a variety of necklines, colors, styles and textures. With a wardrobe change included, both a casual and a dressy ensemble can be photographed in a single session.
For group photos or family portraits it is important to coordinate outfits. Everyone should wear items that complement each other in style and color though not necessarily the exact same outfit. Choosing clothes with same or similar colors unifies the picture and keeps the focus on the people in the portrait.
Children, toddlers and babies photograph best in simple clothing. A popular choice is white and pastels. Also, do not be afraid to choose bold colors for children. Unlike adults, for which this is not always the best choice, vivid colors (especially red, blue and green) can capture a child’s playful nature and create a lively portrait. Props can also be a terrific addition, so consider bringing your child’s favorite book, stuffed animal or toy.
Makeup and hair should be groomed relative to the outfits selected and the clients' typical application.
